Elizabeth Warren Wants to Ban Misinformation. Isn’t That Ironic?

Updated: Jun 26, 2023

A politician wants to ban dishonesty but nobody trusts politicians to be honest. That’s so ironic! What’s the spiritual dimension of this? Find out in this week’s edition of

Isn’t That Ironic?”.

Elizabeth Warren is the latest politician to speak out against misinformation and “fake news”. (https://www.cnbc.com/2020/01/29/warren-proposes-criminal-penalties-for-spreading-disinformation-online.html) A politician who wants laws to make everybody honest? Could anything be more ironic?

In the same week, new polls came out showing that (in both Canada and the USA) public trust in politicians and the media are at an all-time low. Half our populations think that most of what they tell us isn’t true! So, who is going to check their honesty? Politicians and the big media companies. Perfect! Perfectly ironic.

While putting the foxes in charge of the hen house doesn’t make any sense, what is the spiritual dimension of all this nonsense? Didn’t the master teacher say, “Know the truth, and the truth will set you free?” God gives us free will—use it wisely.

In our modern age of information overload, we are compelled to be vigilant gatekeepers of our own consciousness. We are constantly bombarded with information, news, deals, offers, threats. Most of it is noise—ignor it. All of it is not just information, but information that’s meant to influence you in some way. That’s exactly the definition of “propaganda”. That term doesn’t get used much anymore. Pity. Because it’s everywhere. Advertising is propaganda. Political speech is propaganda. Most of what’s on the “news” is propaganda. Everything we hear, we hear because somebody wants us to hear it. It’s meant to manipulate you, not just inform you. By its very nature, it won’t be balanced and honest.

If we want the truth, we have to seek it for ourselves. Do not delegate this essential task to anyone else. It is your responsibility alone. Each of us must make our own decisions in this life and are responsible for our own decisions—about how you vote, what you believe, how you act—everything. Flip Wilson used to joke, "The devil made me do it!" But nobody makes you do anything.

As I mentioned in last week’s post, be wary of anyone who tries to make you fearful. People who create fear in you are almost always trying to manipulate you. Fear is about manipulation. Love is about freedom. Love casts out fear. The truth is within you. If something doesn’t make sense, it probably isn’t true.

Notice the date. Disinformation became popular in the 1980s. Now everyone's doing it.

Yes, the Russians are trying to manipulate you. We’ve had “fake news” forever. In the old days, the KGB had a whole Department of Disinformation. Yes, they really called it that, even though it sounds like something out of Harry Potter. Russia is run by an old-style communist dictator and former KGB leader who still thinks and acts like the Soviet Union did. Of course he’s trying to manipulate you, and so are the Republicans, and the Democrats, and Amazon, and Google, and the Eco-Freaks, and, and, and. Don’t be misled by all the propaganda around you—and it’s all propaganda. Make up your own mind and make your own decisions—in love, not in fear. I trust you’ll make good ones.

God Bless You!
